Sunday Osso Bucco

Osso Bucco with Cheese Grits

Osso Bucco with Cheese Grits

On a quick lunchtime trip to the supermarket for some seafood the other day, I passed right by the meat counter. Well, I meant to pass right by the meat counter, except there were some absolutely gorgeous veal shanks sitting in the case, with a hand-lettered sign over them proclaiming, “Osso Bucco!” Osso bucco? I have never made osso bucco. Actually, I’m not sure I had ever even tasted it, but that just made it more intriguing. I knew it would be good. I had a nice chat with the butcher, who also …continue reading “Sunday Osso Bucco”

Hot Toddy Recipe

The perfect antidote to a cold winter's night
Makings of a Hot Toddy

Makings of a Hot Toddy

The temperature is going to drop down into the twenties tonight, a rarity for this odd winter, which has been so warm that we have been gardening in tee shirts and sandals most weekends. Now I am not complaining about that, but I am celebrating the cold weather. The cottage is freshly cleaned, and I handwashed all my woolies and hung them out in the fresh air to dry. The combination of dark chocolate and sweet, zingy lemon is sublime. He used to bring those chocolates home when he traveled out west on business. Las Vegas, baby! On a really good trip, he would sign a big contract, win at the poker table and bring home Ethel M chocolates. Kind of like a Triple Crown for a road warrior. I’m not …continue reading “Ethel’s Meyer Lemon Chocolate Tart”

Pan-Seared Scallops with Meyer Lemon

Date Night at Home
Pan-Seared Scallops with Meyer Lemon

We seldom find ourselves at home alone, but with our daughter travelling to Cape Canaveral for the launch of NASA’s Curiosity Rover to Mars (lucky girl!), we decided to enjoy a date night. At home. When you live 45 minutes to an hour from the nearest fine dining establishment, date night at home is very appealing. Tonight, we celebrated the harvest of the first ripe Meyer lemon from our young tree, the perfect accompaniment to fresh Florida seafood.

Meyer Lemon

To me, the Meyer lemon is the queen of lemons. With its smooth gorgeous skin and …continue reading “Pan-Seared Scallops with Meyer Lemon”

Candied Pecans and Smoked Jalapeno Salt

Candied Pecans and Smoked Jalapeno Salt

We are preparing for a big feast this week! I love big feasts, don’t you? This year, the cottage will be full to the rafters with family and friends. We’ve got some love and romance going on, some big challenges, and some adventure, too. We have very interesting guests…artists and stylists, lawyers and builders, IT execs and foodies, and one special little boy. When they all arrive on Friday, we’ll share a big welcome dinner, and the conversations will go on into the wee hours, fueled by tall tales, much laughter, and proper …continue reading “Party Favors and a Recipe for Candied Pecans”
