About Ten Days of Holiday Giveaways for Gardeners: For ten crazy days, I am joined by a bunch of great friends to give away some of my favorite products—all designed, written or produced by people that I know and love. You can check out this link to read the details about the participants and prizes. We’ll be gifting lucky winners with new garden tools, books, deck cards, and more throughout the contest! From a custom-designed De Wit potting scoop, to original botanical illustrations, to awesome gardening books to add to your personal library and much more, there will be lots of chances to win a special Christmas present for yourself or your favorite gardener. Why are we doing this? Well, because we love you, that’s why!
ANNOUNCING THE WINNER OF DAY NINE: This evening, I am pleased to announce the winner of Steve Asbell’s original drawing, I Love Basil…Pat Vasil. Isn’t it poetic? Congratulations Pat! Please send your shipping address to cowlickcottage@gmail.com, and we’ll get your drawing out to you shortly after the holiday rush.
It’s Day Ten of Ten Days of Holiday Giveaways for Gardeners, and today the star of the show is P. Allen Smith. Allen is a TV host, writer, and gardener-extraordinaire. I had the great pleasure of spending time with him at his garden home, Moss Mountain Farm, along with 20 other new best friends/garden communicators, as part of his second annual Garden2Blog event last spring. Here’s a little peek at the fun!
Moss Mountain Farm is a mecca for anyone interested in design, gardening, art, and entertaining. We had the chance to explore all of it, from the expansive country kitchen…
…to the decorating details in the guest bedroom…
…and the art studio where Allen paints.
Some of us even tried out the famous copper tub on the sleeping porch!
Among the most outstanding elements of Moss Mountain Farm are its hillside setting, overlooking the river, and the gorgeous gardens.
The setting is reminiscent of Jefferson’s Monticello and like Jefferson, Smith raises much of his own vegetables, fruit and livestock. I was in heaven wandering the paths of the one-acre organic vegetable garden…
…the formal rose garden…
…the chicken coops…
…and all the gorgeous Proven Winners annuals and perennials tucked into their beds and containers.
Allen treated us to lunch with dishes created from his cookbooks, like this delicious chicken salad…
…and his Buttermilk Pecan Pie, which actually caused a swooning reaction amongst the bloggers.
Allen is one of the most generous and influential people in the gardening world, and it was a dream come true for me to meet him and tour Moss Mountain Farm. Allen is joining in on our fun today by giving away a set of his autographed how-to deck cards. These coveted cards will teach you all about bulbs, roses and herbs & veggies. I love mine, and I know more than one garden designer who got started using these cards to design beautiful gardens and containers. You can get to know P. Allen Smith by following his blog, watching him on PBS and following his great instructional videos on YouTube. I also adore his cookbook, P. Allen Smith’s Seasonal Recipes from the Garden, which contains the recipe for the sexiest Buttermilk Pecan Pie on the planet (my friend, Shawna also shares the recipe…shhhh)! How to win this prize? It’s easier than buying a lottery ticket (and your chances to win are much better!). Since this is the final prize of my contest, and Christmas is upon us, I will be leaving this post up until the day after Christmas. Just leave us a holiday greeting in the comments section to enter. We’d also appreciate you sharing this post on Facebook and Twitter if you are so inclined. Happy holidays from our house to yours!
Disclosure: Each of these gifts was provided at no cost to me so that I could give them away to you!

I’m a late bloomer to the garden this year but I made it. You see I’ve only recently discovered Mr. Allen’s show as well as many amazing gardeners on the Internet including this one. Having my roses die has come to be one of the best things ever because it has forced me to research and learn connecting me to people like yourself. Thanks for the opportunity to win the cards but even more for your dedication so amateurs like me can learn and grow! Merry Christmas!!
Hope everyone has a joyous Christmas Day!

That pie looks delicious. I’ll have to get the recipe for my wife. Happy Holidays!
Ed, There’s a link to the pie recipe in this blog post! My friend, Shawna, has it on her site.
I too LOVE P. Allen Smith’s Seasonal Recipes from the Garden cookbook, but I didn’t know about the how-to deck cards! I am relatively new to gardening so those cards would be very welcome if I am fortunate enough to win. Thanks for your always interesting blog (I bought a Meyer lemon tree because of your blog) and sharing bits of your P. Allen Smith Moss Mountain Farm tour. I hope to get there some day…
Merry Christmas!
Cindy, I am thrilled that you bought a Meyer lemon tree! Let me know how it does. I’m hoping for my first “real” crop of lemons this year. Merry Christmas!
Nice pictures. Happy Holidays.
Thanks, Jeavonna! Happy holidays to you!
